 Part of the appeal of building a basic terrarium is that it

 does not require a great deal of gardening know-how. 

 All you need is the container gravel in the base for drainage,

 active carbon (pet store for aquarium cuts down on bacteria ),

 cactus or potting soil, moss, tiny pebbles or sand for the top

 and a variety of small plants. Ferns and small sub tropical

 work great in covered and closed containers. Succulents in open

 or vented ones.
